Loyal, generous in good times and bad By ROBYN BRISTOW Murray Taylor was loyal, generous, trusting, a mentor and a ‘‘dam good bloke’’. He was there for his staff in good times and in bad and when it mattered, just a couple weeks ago, several of them were there for him. Sadly there was little they could do to save their boss after tonnes of lime rubble buried him as he worked on a digger at a limeworks near Waikari. Mr Taylor was the director of Heathstock Haulage, a trucking company which ran the quarry on a lease from the Hurunui District Council and sold limestone to local contractors, dairy farmers and others for tracks. Four of his long serving team ­ Rod McKay, Murray Clemens (Clem), Neil Hislop and Ian Wright ­ gathered in Waikari last Friday to remember the man,

whom they had worked for, over the years. All spoke of a committed Christian whom they respected and who trusted the ability of his staff to get on and get the job done. A Seventh Day Adventist, who did not drink alcohol, Mr Taylor would turn out at birthdays and staff functions, and enjoy social events, often being the last to leave. He would dig deep into his pocket if anyone was in financial strife and supported them through personal problems without judging any one of his team, some of whom ‘‘worked hard and played hard’’, they said. ‘‘It didn’t worry him a bit, no matter how hard we played, as long as we turned up Monday morning at 3.30am,’’ they said. Mr Taylor always made sure everyone was back in the yard on Friday afternoon and the men had the weekend off.

Taylor. ‘‘We were always home early on Friday.’’ His generosity saw him donate lime for the Medbury Racecourse during its early development, discount lime to a staff member even eight years after leaving the company, put on staff dinners and take them away for

Christmas trips to places like Akaroa where there were always plenty of ‘‘toys for the boys’’ such as jet skis which got a ‘‘fair hammering’’. ‘‘He was loyal to guys who were loyal to him. We were just one big family and a very stable workforce. If someone was leaving back in the day it was big news. It was a scandal. Some left, some came back. ‘‘Apart from being a businessman he was one of the family and was supportive of our families,’’ they said. He employed locals and was a ‘‘huge’’ employer in the region when Heathstock Haulage was at its peak with around 42 staff and about 30 trucks. But Heathstock Haulage was not just trucks ­ there were graders, diggers, bulldozers and lime sowers. Clem says he was a ‘‘canny’’ business guy. He would buy a truck or bulldozer and then find

work for it ‘‘rather than the other way around’’. He seemed to thrive on battling the Commercial Vehicle Unit if any of his team were pulled up for infringements. ‘‘He won more battles than he lost,’’ says Clem who ran the office for many years for Mr Taylor. Just one day back at the helm while Clem had to go away, was enough for Mr Taylor who then left it entirely up to Clem to organise how the operation was run. ‘‘He had altered my planner significantly. It was a bit annoying when I got back so I said its ‘either you or me running this place’ and he virtually left me alone after that,’’ said Clem. Mr Taylor and his wife Jill then concentrated their efforts on other ventures such as Ostrich farming, leaving Clem to it. Continued Page 2

that can help those dealing with the drought. Mayor Winton Dalley says a lot of help has been offered and the group was formed to ensure there was a ‘‘structure’’ around getting that help to farmers. He says there is also many events planned to give farmers a break, or a chance to chat with other farmers or just to allow farming families a chance to get out and enjoy some entertainment. Events already planned for farmers over the coming months include a Dairy NZ ‘‘Tactics for Tight Times’’ event at the Cust Community Hall for dairy farmers today, (June 25), to discuss the end of the season results and look ahead to the spring.

There is also a Technology Seminar at the Waikari Hall on June 26, 11am to 4pm, organised by the North Canterbury Sustainable Farming Systems Project. It will look at addressing an information and technology gap for North Canterbury pastoral farmers. It is aimed at deer farmers but beef and sheep farmers are welcome. On July 24 a Women’s ‘Fill your cup day’ will be held at the Tin Shed in Amberley for the often forgotten anchor of farming families. It is a free event with dynamic speakers. Concern over shifting crossing Greypower is concerned about the loss of a pedestrian crossing in the centre of Kaiapoi’s shopping centre. The Waimakariri District Council and the Kaiapoi Community Board have approved shifting the central pedestrian crossing to the McDonald’s end of the shopping area. But Miles Jackson, President of Grey Power North Canterbury, says this could put pedestrians, particularly older people and others with disabilities, at risk. He says in an effort to reduce the extra distance they would have to walk between pedestrian crossings ­ from Blackwells corner to the McDonald’s roundabout ­ they may attempt to cross the road where

He believes that it is more dangerous to re­site the mid­way crossing to the south end of the main shopping centre than to leave it where it is because of the notoriously busy roundabout at McDonalds. Mr Jackson says at the other end of the block the Blackwells’ corner pedestrian crossing, which is sited at the base of the bridge, means it is difficult for pedestrians to see traffic coming on to the bridge and also the busy Raven Quay exits on to William Street at this spot. He is urging the council to rethink the proposal in the interest of all pedestrians, particularly for the elderly and vulnerable people of the area.

Boss a great judge of character From Page 1 The trucking line of Heathstock Haulage was sold to Freight Lines in 2004 who took over the office at the limeworks for about a year before moving out. Mr Taylor concentrated on the limeworks where business grew as dairy farming took hold in the Culverden area, with the limeworks becoming the main supplier of lime rubble for dairy lanes. Rod, Ian, Clem and Neil all knew their boss or ex­boss pretty well Monday to Friday, but there was a personal side to his life they were unaware of until his funeral, including spending sometime overseas doing Missionary work. ‘‘Murray kept that side of his life private and did not bring that into his work life,’’ they said. All said he was a great judge of character and that their jobs seemed to take on a life of their own as more and more trust was put in their hands.

Ian started in the workshop as a 19­year­ old two days a week. He graduated to five days a week and ended up driving trucks fulltime. ‘‘He gave me a chance and money. I wouldn’t be where I am today without that,’’ he said. Neil ‘‘tried to leave’’, a task that took about eight years after a long career with Heathstock Haulage. Eventually he just didn’t turn up one day. That was just three years ago. ‘‘I finished like I started. Very casually,’’ he said. Rod began as a casual driver after selling his half share in a transport firm in Hawarden. ‘‘I came to do a bit of casual and it turned in to having to ask for time off and then I became fulltime and really enjoyed it,’’ he said. ‘‘When Neil finished at the limeworks and went back on a truck, I took over,’’ said

Rod. Clem approached him one Sunday evening about a job and spent about two hours talking on the phone before he could pop the question. ‘‘He just said I will see you in the morning. He was pretty casual,’’ he said. ‘‘Heathstock was my place of employment but it was like one big family and Murray was always there to support that family,’’ said Clem. Rod and Neil were there for their boss when he needed them most. They took over from Pete Mallison who was there when the lime tumbled down burying Mr Taylor who was working on a digger. ‘‘It was a pleasure to do it for him. Murray was always there for his employees and we felt we needed to be there to help at this time. We did our bit on Tuesday and the recovery people then came in to do their stuff,’’ said Rod.

By SHELLEY TOPP The biggest grin at the McIntosh’s Wheelchair Fishing Platform opening, on the banks of the Waimakariri River, near Kaiapoi last Sunday, belonged to Bruce Mote. He had waited 29 years for this moment. ‘‘It’s very exciting,’’ he said. ‘‘Going fishing is better than anti­ depressants. It makes you feel alive, especially if you catch a fish and this is a great spot to do that.’’ The unique new platform was a first for New Zealand, and possibly the world, he said. The double amputee became disabled in 1985 when he lost a leg after an industrial accident. Then in 1991 he lost his other leg due to complications from the 1985 accident. Since becoming wheel­chair bound, he has felt continuing frustration at the lack of river access for disabled anglers. He often used to joke with able­bodied anglers, who complained about the high cost of fishing licences, that he only renewed his licence every two years because he could only access a fraction of the river areas they could. He happened to mention this to a good friend, and fellow angler Ron Stuart, at Christmas time 2009. ‘‘How would it be if there was a wheelchair platform at the banks of the Waimakariri River, at McIntosh’s, so you could fish on equal terms with any other angler?’’ Mr Stuart asked. ‘‘That would be terrific,’’ Mr Mote replied. He estimated that there would be around 150 other wheelchair­bound anglers he knew of who would also be keen to use such a platform. But, he wasn’t holding out too much hope, since he had been trying to achieve the same thing since the early nineties. ‘‘We just kept getting pushed from one department to another,’’ he said. However, under Mr Stuart’s guidance, operation wheelchair fishing platform, sprang to life that day. It has been a long and complicated journey, made possible by the energy and tenacity of Mr Stuart, and many other volunteers within a close community, all working hard together to achieve something special. The project began with architectural designer Andrew Lill’s drawings and plans. They were submitted to the Waimakariri District Council, but not approved. The council said they could not approve the platform unless it had a metre­high rail around it, which would make it impossible for a person in a wheelchair to fish from. Undeterred by this seemingly fatal setback, Mr Stuart got a more encouraging result from the Department of Building and Housing. ‘‘They advised that the original concept plan was ideal and under a section of the Building Act it could be built without consent or permit,’’ he said. ‘‘Environment Canterbury approved the installation at McIntosh’s immediately and was so supportive.’’ Then Tim Smith, of Smith’s Crane and Construction, came on board. He visited

the site with Mr Stuart, had a look at the plans and said his company could do the work. ‘‘Oh, and we will pay for it too,’’ he told Mr Stuart as they were leaving the site. ‘‘That blew me away,’’ Mr Stuart said. However, just when everything seemed to be coming together the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes tore apart the site and brought all plans to a halt. ‘‘The riverbanks at McIntosh’s were destroyed, with great portions of the site slipping into the river, and an extensive fault line cracking the river bank,’’ Mr Stuart said. The project was put on hold while Environment Canterbury reconstructed the area to provide protection to the river banks. Once the location settled revised specifications had to be put forward. ‘‘Kirk Roberts Consulting Engineers came to the rescue and presented a fresh design and construction plan,’’ Mr Stuart said. Then early this year, the Smith Crane and Construction team, led by Matt Draper, assembled the platform and unique three­ metre screw piles, at their Johns Road site,

ready for transportation and installation at McIntosh’s on the Waimakariri River. ‘‘Christchurch Ready Mix Concrete came on board at this stage with support of concrete for the platform and piles plus shingle to consolidate the structure’s installation,’’ Mr Stuart said. Onsite work was completed last month and when that was done Environment Canterbury offered to supply qualifying wheelchair anglers with a key, free of charge, to enable vehicle riverside access through the Ferry Road gates direct to the platform. The keys will be available from Blackwell’s Department store, in Kaiapoi. Mr Mote, a long­time advocate for disabled people, is hoping the success of this project may lead to others around New Zealand and worldwide. ‘‘We are all over the moon about it,’’ he said. Between 400 and 500 salmon have been caught at the McIntosh’s site this season, and stocks were further replenished on Sunday when North Canterbury Fish and Game rangers brought about 1000 one­ year­old salmon from their Silverstream hatchery to the river for release.

An icy wintry blast After 60mls of rain, it seemed unlikely the snow would settle north of Waipara last Thursday night. But as the flakes fell thick and fast snow quickly settled. Wet and heavy, the snow caused havoc in the Hawarden area with power outages for about 12 hours. The heaviness of the snow sitting on drought stressed trees caused branches to break off throughout North Canterbury blocking roads and bringing down power lines. A warm wind soon saw the dump of snow melt and despite the heavy rain and then snow, most areas had just soaked up the moisture, a testament to how dry the ground was.

While the world north of the Weka Pass became a winter wonderland ­ Waipara and Omihi escaped the worst of the snow fall with just a bit falling on the hill tops. Further south around Oxford the snow caused a few problems with the Oxford Area School closing on Friday, power and phone outages, many broken branches and roads having to be cleared by graders from early morning. Nor’west winds whipped snow off the tops of the foothills on Friday while further down a thick fog prevented the sun from helping thaw snow. However, Sunday brought sun and more north west winds to help the thaw, but squally showers Sunday evening brought a light dusting back to the tops.

Big splash for Stroke Club By SHELLEY TOPP It was one of those madcap events where good­hearted people tackle crazy stunts to raise money for charity. The Mid­Winter Splash, where sponsored volunteers jump into a large bucket of icy water, was held on the corner of High Street and Ashley Street in Rangiora, last Saturday morning. The event was organised by Rangiora Promotions to raise money for the Rangiora Stroke Club. Wacky costumes and hot­water bottles were the order of the day with Master of Ceremonies, Kevin Johnson, the Rangiora Promotions chairman, setting the tone in a fetching penguin onesie, particularly appropriate attire for the chilly conditions. The Waimakariri Mayor David Ayers, without glasses in preparation for his jump into the icy water, was not to be outdone either. He departed from his usual satorially appropriate mayoral attire choosing instead black and white shorts over blue and black striped long­johns, and a white long­sleeved top, for his plunge, but afterwards changed into an elegant black dressing gown. Half­way through the event a long wad of

black hair was fished from the icy water. ‘‘Oh oh who’s lost their hair,’’ Mr Johnson cheekily asked the crowd, turning to face Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey who had made an earlier jump. ‘‘Is that you Matt?’’ ‘‘No,’’ came the reply. Thirteen volunteer jumpers took part in the event with each having to raise at least $100 to enter. Elisa Leach, the owner of Rangiora cafe, Reality Bites, raised the most collecting $148.00, and jumped with her son Felix, aged 10. Although a $50 donation on the day by a Compass FM listener took Rory McCall to $150.10. Rangiora Promotions co­ordinator Kirstyn Barnett said the jumpers raised more than $1500, with the Rangiora Lions Club donating $300 and Rangiora Lionesses $200. The sausage sizzle and collections on the day could add a further $300 to the total. Rangiora Promotions chairman Kevin Johnson said the event brought life and activity into the town centre. ‘‘With the funds going towards the Rangiora Stroke Club, we know it is going to a good cause. Strokes can affect people at any age and have a major effect on families and sufferers.’’

Mid-winter swim Those who missed out on last Saturday’s Rangiora Mid­winter Splash can take the plunge at Waikuku Beach this Sunday. The Waikuku Beach Surf Life Saving Club is hosting its annual mid­winter swim this Sunday, June 28, from 11am. President Tania Bailey says around 50 to 60 people took the plunge last year and she is hoping even more people will join her in the surf at Waikuku Beach on Sunday. ‘‘It’s a lovely chilly swim. I do it every year ­ it’s always a very quick swim. It’s not

a great time of year to go swimming. Long Term Plan funding decisions Council has recently heard submissions to the Long Term Plan and after deliberating, have set the rates for the coming financial year. As a result of submissions council has allocated extra funds to Destination Kaikoura ­ $15,000 of this is for marketing. Destination Kaikoura Manager Glenn Ormsby is busy promoting us as a destination at every opportunity and we are seeing results across the board. Also $20,000 was given as seed funding to create a role for an Event co­ordinator to help grow existing events and create new sustainable events. Success will be when this role can be self funding. The rural community of Clarence has been allocated $10,000 of funding from the Parks and Reserves account to continue and complete the works around the Community Hall. The local community of Kekerengu have fundraised more than $24,000 locally plus hundreds of hours of labour has been donated. One of the main concerns expressed is the coastal erosion around Kaikoura including along the Highway North and South of town. During the submission hearings we had an interesting presentation from

Environment Canterbury on their monitoring around Kaikoura. It is obvious there is no quick fix, they are continuing their work and we will liaise with them through this process. The re­nourishment option along the Esplanade may well be the most effective action at present. During June we had Tourism New Zealand hold their monthly meeting in Kaikoura and we hosted them along with our Industry Partners at the i­Site. Later that evening they took the tourism board out for a meal where we shared our community stories and opportunities with them. The following day the sun shone and the NZ Tourism Board was able to get on the water thanks to Whalewatch Kaikoura and enjoyed viewing all of our wildlife. This was an outstanding success for all parties and shows the value of industry collaboration. Work is progressing on the Civic Centre; the first floor area is close to handing over to the Museum Committee. Some roofing insulation panels are due and that will allow the central part of the roof to be completed. Council are working with insurers on the issues on the remainder of the roof.

The gleaming white stylish Maserati 014 Ghibli on display on the city showroom floor was attracting a lot of interest. It also caught the eye of retired Loburn orchardist Denny Dunlop. He’s a big fan of Italian­designed cars, and spent a lot of time looking over the masterpiece of Italian design and engineering during a trip to Christchurch late last year to get his Alfa Romeo serviced. When his wife, Dorothy, gave him a wave from across the showroom floor to say they were ready to go, it was the sign he had been waiting for. ‘‘I thought she meant buy the car,’’ Denny says with a grin. A few days later, and $150,000 lighter, the Maserati was on it’s way out to Loburn and is now parked in the Dunlop’s garage, right alongside their other family car, Dorothy’s Mitsubishi Colt shopping basket. Dorothy’s wave had delivered an unintended message but there are no hard feelings. She loves the car as much as Denny and they are both having a lot of fun with it. ‘‘People often ask me if I drive it,’’ Dorothy says. ‘‘Of course I do. It’s such a lovely car to drive.’’ It’s also a lovely car to ride in. driver and passengers. No­one travelling in this Italian beauty ever needs to be too hot or too cold. It has a keyless, push­button ignition, and there’s an exceptional GPS (global positioning system) that tells you, at the push of a button, everything you could possibly need to know while travelling around New Zealand. Where to go, how to get there, where to eat, what’s on the menu, the nearest fuel station. Open the doors and the windows roll down slightly, then roll back up again when the door closes to ensure a perfect seal. Pull into a fuel station and only the right kind of fuel will flow into the tank. Anything else will be automatically blocked. The Maserati Ghibli is a rare sight on North Canterbury roads. It’s an 8­speed automatic with seamless gear change, a manual option if you prefer, and a top speed of 280km an hour. It’s designed for the speed highways of Europe. However, back here in North Canterbury, Denny has the cruise control set at 110km. Zero to 100 kilometres in five seconds is an exhilarating ride and provides a glimpse of what this car can do. The Maserati 014 Ghibli is named after a hot, dusty African desert wind and it’s easy to see why. ‘‘The car is something special that we enjoy,’’ Denny says. They had a lot of fun last year joining other classic car owners for Trevor and Lorraine Stanley’s North Canterbury Classic Tour Christmas Picnic during which $727 was raised for charity and donated to the Amberley St John Ambulance. There has also been an enjoyable trip to Picton and back, but mostly their Maserati is ‘‘just a family car’’, doing the usual rounds, and that’s the way they like it. Denny has always owned Alfa Romeo’s and still owns one bought in 1975. It’s tucked away in a big shed alongside four vintage German­built Lanz Bulldog tractors he’s been tinkering with. It ‘‘cost almost as much as a house at the time’’, but in terms of what else was on the market then ‘‘it was miles ahead of its time’’.

The Austin A40 Sport came about by a deal between Jensen Motors and Austin. Jensen was employed to design a body to go on to an A40 Devon chassis. To give rigidity to the open body, the centre section of the chassis was boxed. The first cars came out at the London Motor show in 1949 with production starting in 1950 for the 1951 model. It was designed as a sporty touring car, rather than a sports car. A two door convertible, it had a soft top and was built to carry four passengers. By 1953, with 4011 made, production ceased.

New home for sports car The Austin A40 Sports is a special car, with just over 4000 made and only ten on the road in New Zealand. For Hawarden car enthusiasts, Jeff and Margaret Walker, the opportunity to buy a non­runner to add to their Austin collection was too good to pass up. They already have one fully restored A40 Sports and had been looking for another one to restore to have a ‘his and hers’. Their first car came from the Wairarapa, where it been sitting in a shed for 20 years under cover. With a new battery, fresh fuel and the brakes freed up, the car was driven back to the South Island, only needing the occasional top up of oil after taking on the big hills. The previous owner told them of another car which was being kept under a house in Christchurch marked for demolition and gave them the number to ring. After making contact 18 months ago, the Austin A40 Sports was finally brought out from under the house a few weeks ago. The seller had owned the car for 30 years, but with an Austin Healey to restore and a need to store the cars somewhere, the A40 Sports was looking for a new home. Back in Hawarden, the car has gone under cover again to be restored. Arriving in many bits, it has the original running gear. Jeff thinks the paint is probably not the colour it came out with and intends sending the car details to the Montague Museum in England. The museum is able to provide an extract of the original build sheet which will specify the colour of the paint and upholstery. While the motor is intact, the compression still needs to be tested which

Winter camp Rangiora’s drama students are offering something different this winter. Instead of its usual senior production during the July school holidays, the Dale Hartley School of Speech and Drama is hosting a ‘‘performing arts winter camp’’ during KidsFest. ‘‘Normally the school produces a family show for Kidsfest, but with the holidays so soon after ‘‘Beauty & the Beast’’ by the North Canterbury Musical Society and ‘‘Into the Woods’’ by Rangiora High School, we felt that Rangiora audiences might like to get involved rather than watch another show,’’ school director Dale Hartley­Brown says. ‘‘So this year budding young performers can head along for a week of performing arts training right here in Rangiora.’’ A performing arts winter camp will run from Monday to Thursday, July 6­9, and is open to students aged 8­15 years and

will split into three different age groups. ‘‘Parents looking for something for their kids to do these holidays can send them along for a daily dose of singing, dance and acting lessons covering a wide range of topics like pop singing, jazz dance, Shakespeare, improvisation and musical theatre acting to name but a few,’’ Dale says. The week will culminate with a back stage tour of the new Rangiora Town Hall on the Friday morning. Dale says it was exciting sitting down with five tutors to discuss what they would cover in the four days. ‘‘There are three timeslots across the day and three sessions running simultaneously, so that is 36 different sessions to plan.’’ She says her staff of ‘‘great local talent’’ may have moved into Christchurch for further opportunities, but remain loyal to the local community.

Local historian leaves legacy Local historian Donald Newell Hawkins, the author of Beyond the Waimakariri, died recently. He was aged 87. The much treasured book, celebrating the Canterbury centenary for combined local bodies, has been revered as a regional history and a detailed and accurate account of the settlers between the Waimakariri and Waipara Rivers in North Canterbury. It has graced many bookshelves since it was published in 1957. Mr Hawkins also went on to write Rangiora which was published in 1983 for the Rangiora Borough Council centenary and also compiled a short history of the Rangiora Borough School for its centenary. Donald Newell Hawkins was born on October 13, 1927, the son of Lucy and Lance Hawkins who lived in Good Street. His father and uncle had a grocer’s shop in High Street and young Donald went to school at the Borough School from the age of six, which did not take students aged 5 due to the depression. He went on to Rangiora High School where he was a keen cricket and rugby player and was House Captain of Chapman House in 1945. He was a competent violinist having been taught first at the Convent and later in Christchurch. Mr Hawkins went on to Canterbury University where he gained a Master of Arts in History with his thesis being on Rangiora’s history. He did one year teacher training in Auckland and taught at Christchurch West ­ now Hagley College before heading to the United Kingdom for a couple of years where he met his future wife Patricia and where he used a scooter to tour Europe. He returned to New Zealand in 1960. The couple married in Rangiora in 1962 before Mr Hawkins went on to teach at Ashburton College as head of History and where he also taught music. He later became deputy principal of Waimate. A keen fisherman and gardener, Mr Hawkins retired to Rangiora in the early nineties.He wrote interesting paragraphs for the Rangiora Early Records monthly newsletter for several years. Some of these were later published as Rangiora Random Jottings for the society. Mr Hawkins also donated his research notes for his books to the society which have proved to be valuable along with his books for research of family histories. Mr Hawkins is survived by his adult children, Graeme and Linda.

The time is fast approaching to have file income tax returns. July 7 is the due date for filing unless a tax agent has requested and gained a valid extension of time. You may need to file a return if you are self­employed, run a company or have worked for cash. Do you have income from property, partnerships, trusts or from overseas? This due date applies to provisional taxpayers who use the standard or estimation option to calculate their provisional tax payments. If you use the ratio option to calculate your provisional tax payments and you have a March balance date, your second provisional tax instalment is due on August 28. This due date also applies to you if you have an interim payment obligation for your student loan. The interim payments you make will be offset against your repayment obligation at the end of the year. If you think you have something to pay but aren’t sure, you can call the IRD on 0800 377 774. Trail of damage A trail of destruction has been left in the wake of offenders who broke into the Amberley pool last week and smashed and damaged toilets in the town. Constable Bill Parker says the break in and damage around the town are ‘‘pretty disappointing’’. ‘‘It is a community resource and the council has better places to spend money than on wilful damage,’’ he said. The pool, on Douglas Road, was broken into last Thursday evening. Offenders smashed their way into the

All students began term two training for the annual cross country which is held on neighbouring farmland thanks to local farmers who are willingly to allow the students to run over their properties. The students who were successful went to Waikari to represent the school at the Hurunui cross country. Ten of its runners qualified for the Canterbury championships held at the Halswell Domain where all runners excelled, particularly Madeleine Haugh (aged 10) who came ninth, and qualified for the Canterbury team, and Abbey Pain who came 12th. Years two and three have been walking, at least two times a term, over farmland, through domains and streets exploring their local community. The Waimakariri Zone Committee needs people with local knowledge, passion, and experience to provide balance for the differing water-use interests in the zone.

About the Canterbury Water Management Strategy The Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS) puts finding sustainable solutions to local water issues into the community’s hands. There are ten geographic zone committees around Canterbury made up of local community members, local Rūnanga representatives, district and city councils, and Environment Canterbury. Each zone committee is required to find solutions to deliver safe drinking water supplies and clean rivers and streams, enhance recreational opportunities, encourage sustainable farming practices, and protect environmental cultural values.

What is the zone committee working on? The committee is currently focused on working with the community to develop water quality limits in local catchments as part of its sub-regional planning process which will begin next year. The committee’s community-led priorities for the zone include improving water quality and quantity in local waterways to protect and enhance cultural, recreational, environmental and economic values.

Funding change for NIWA station installed Waimak promotions The way promotion of the Waimakariri district’s three main towns is funded is set to change. The Waimakariri District Council has set aside a budget of $68,290 in the Long Term Plan signed off last week to fund promotions collectively for Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Oxford. Previously the council has made separate grants to Rangiora Promotions, the Kaiapoi Promotions Association (KPA) and the Oxford Promotions Action Committee. Policy and customer service manager Simon Markham says two out of the three promotion associations have been struggling with operations and administrative duties, and the association presidents have sought council support to ‘‘relocate work to buy support for services’’. By combining the collective funding of $68,290 for the three positions, a single role could be created and it would not necessarily need to be full time. He says should any of the associations fold as a result of the review, community events such as Christmas parades could be co­ordinated by Enterprise North Canterbury or picked up by local groups.

Just before Christmas last year a nearly seven foot American man with a face known to thousands apparently vanished. This man, hugely talented NBA star Larry Sanders disappeared, walking away from a contract worth $USD 21 million over three years. No­one knew where he was or why he left a job which would make him rich, famous and idolised. Because I am not a basketball fan the whole incident made no impression on me at all. However after months of silence in an online video a softly spoken man in a beanie appeared. ‘‘I’m Larry Sanders. I’m a person. I’m a father, I’m an artist. I’m a writer. I’m a painter. I’m a musician. And sometimes I play basketball,’’ he said. Larry had been in a programme for people with depression, anxiety and mood disorders ­ he had been using marijuana to try to cope. Two things he said stood out for me. The first was about his money, job and fame. ‘‘I think playing basketball is seen to be a desirable, lucrative job. How could you be unhappy there? For me,

Sometimes it is hard to remember the people around us are more than the boxes we put them in, but we do need to keep looking for the ‘and’. And we do need to remember that Jesus taught us true happiness is not found in our possessions but in the people around us who care for us.

Visitors to the mouth of Hurunui River in North Canterbury may have noticed a new addition to the landscape. It is a monitoring station that has been installed by NIWA to collect data on the natural dynamics of the river mouth at this popular fishing spot. The station has two cameras mounted on a pole at the end of Hurunui Mouth Rd as well as a water level recorder in the lagoon. The cameras record an image every 15 minutes during daylight to monitor the position, width and length of the lagoon outlet channel and the position of the gravel barrier. NIWA hydrodynamics scientist Richard Measures says the aim of the project is to develop a model which

can be applied to any lagoon or hapua to assess the impacts of water extraction, sea level rise and other changes to the river mouth and lagoon dynamics. ‘‘If successful, this research will help people predict and understand the impact of potential changes on river mouths,’’ says Mr Measures. The Hurunui River is under pressure from irrigation and Mr Measures says this research may help understand the effects of water use in the catchment. It was the perfect site for a monitoring station because it offered an unimpeded view of the river mouth. The station will be in place for about three years.

Rangiora’s popular skate park, at Dudley Park, is set for an expansion. The Waimakariri District Council has set aside $142,000 and is working on a draft design to extend the skate park, in response to community requests. Last year council staff were approached by a group of local skaters who were interested in being involved in the design of the extension. The skaters already had some ideas for elements they wanted to see in the design. The council has contracted the same company that designed and built the skate park at Kaiapoi’s Trousselot Park. ‘‘We have held two meetings with the local skaters that came to council with ideas. At the first meeting the group presented us with a design for the extension and asked us to think about a number of features in the design for the extension,’’ a council spokesperson says. These included providing for all skate park users in the design ­ skaters, scooters, BMX, rollerblades ­ and different age groups and skill levels, not cramping elements, keep open space between them, keep it simple ­ a middle ground in terms of difficulty, ensure the surface is not slippery, provide something different from Kaiapoi and Washington Park.

Other ideas included providing seating beneath the trees to stop people sitting in the skate park and a drinking fountain. ‘‘Based on these ideas the skate park designer prepared a preliminary design for the skate park extension,’’ the spokesperson says. ‘‘We showed this to our group of local skaters and asked for their comments. Some of the skaters liked the preliminary design and some didn’t, others wanted to see more street skating elements with less bowl and others wanted to see different elements. ‘‘Once we have made some changes to the preliminary design and talked to the local skaters again, we will put this out for public feedback.’’ Other residents are encouraged to give feedback and open days will be held later this year and information will be available on the council’s website, Facebook page and on signs at the skate park. IHC recruits friends By DAVID HILL IHC has a new volunteer co­ordinator in North Canterbury and is keen for new recruits. Jackie Cronin has been in the role for two months and says there are plenty of opportunities for volunteers to get involved. She spoke to The News ahead of Volunteer Week which runs from June 21­28. IHC North Canterbury launched a new ‘‘friends’’ initiative last year and quickly gained 11 volunteers. However, by the time Jackie took over this number had dropped to five. Volunteer friends are matched up with people with mental disabilities according to common interests. ‘‘I have interviewed another four, but there is room for more. The ideal number from the perspective of my role being part time is to get up to 25 volunteers, but we would like lots more than that.’’ Volunteers complete a short interview and a police check and the expectation is a commitment of at least two hours a fortnight, but ‘‘it’s like any friendship, it’s about whenever they are able to get together’’. ‘‘There are lots of opportunities for people with all different sorts of interests. The friendship programme is spending one­on­one time with someone and doing things you both enjoy, so that can encompass anything, including swimming, going to the library or going out for coffee.’’ Volunteers are also needed for a skill based programme, where people teach a skill to a person with a disability who wants to learn. This can require a two to three month commitment and could include something as simple as catching a bus, shopping for clothes or learning how to use an iPad. Jackie says helping improve the life of someone with a disability can be very

Kiwi tucker in Kaiapoi Jagger & Co is looking to bring kiwi tucker and local history back to Kaiapoi. Co­owner Kevin Johnson says a new winter menu is being prepared by new venue manager Ben and new head chef Kyle complete with tasty kiwi dishes, while the name Jagger brings back a slice of Kaiapoi history. Kevin says Jagger & Co is not named after Rolling Stone Mick Jagger, but rather Henry Jagger, who opened the first brewery in Kaiapoi in 1862. ‘‘It’s about bringing history back, because Canterbury has lost so much of its history. ‘‘Jagger’s brewery, Kaiapoi Brewery, hit the headlines in 1903 after a suspicious burglary and fire. ‘‘A great yarn unfolded, which can now be shared over a beer or wine and some good food in the new look restaurant and bar.’’ Jagger & Co Restaurant and Bar is locally owned and opened in November last year in unit 3, 77 Hilton Street, Kaiapoi, as a family restaurant to serve the local community, taking over a venue which has had a long history as a public bar.

KidFest events in Oxford There is no excuse for getting bored in Oxford during next month’s school holidays. KidsFest is back and there are eight events being planned in Oxford to keep the kids amused. The fortnight of fun gets under way with the Great Art Treasure Hunt being held at Arts in Oxford beginning on Saturday, July 4, and each day (except Mondays) for the following two weeks. It is an opportunity to explore the gallery, learn lots about art and go in the draw to win some cool art prizes. Zoe Wiseman will be offering art workshops at Arts in Oxford on a range of topics, including charcoal drawing of native New Zealand birds and animals, soft pastel landscape, mixed media painting of flowers and pencil drawing of an animal. Book now at the gallery. Arts in Oxford will also be hosting ‘‘creative handmade bookmaking’’ on Wednesday and Thursday, July 15 and 16,

Winds of change expressed in nervous Rangiora times By SHELLEY TOPP An invitation to attend ‘‘an evening of discussion on poetry, art and the importance of a clear voice in these nervous times’’, attracted more than 100 people in Rangiora last Friday. Expressions of Change was organised by North Canterbury artist Alison Erickson, in conjunction with her Winds of Change project. The evening, held at the Rangiora High School hall, was hosted by Ms Erickson’s partner, writer and artist, Sam Mahon with guest speakers Welsh­born poet Steve Thomas, actress/director/song writer Bryony Jamison, and sculptor/musician Chris Reddington, co­creator of the CPIT Earthquake Memorial. Winds of Change was commissioned by Creative Communities, which is run by Creative New Zealand, the national arts development agency. Artists were asked to put forward their ideas on an earthquake memorial for the people of Waimakariri. Ms Erickson’s stunning bronze statute was on public display for the first time during the function on Friday night. It is about half life size and depicts a family group. A man, a woman and a child. The statue will be mounted on a

concrete plinth outside the Rangiora Library. The installation was planned for last Friday afternoon, but the wet weather forced a postponement. The public were invited to take part in Ms Erickson’s Wind of Change project by submitting their post­ earthquake perception of change as poems. Seventy poems were submitted during her Winds of Change: Words Wanted exhibition at the Chamber Gallery in Rangiora during February and March this year. Five of these poems will be etched into a copper plate which will be fixed to the outside of the plinth supporting the statue. Words from all of the other poems submitted will also be etched on to the plate. Although five poems had been chosen for inclusion in the project ‘‘with the intention of best representing a cross section of the Waimakariri community’’, when read together they formed a more complete picture, Ms Erickson said. ‘‘A portrait of a town.’’ Five of the poets who submitted poems for the project recited their work at the function on Friday night. Ms Erickson has produced a booklet containing all of the submitted poems which was available on the night.

Road upgrade on track The Southbrook Road upgrade is on track to be finished in time for the opening of the new PAK’nSAVE supermarket late next month, despite weather delays. ‘‘It is now possible to see what Southbrook Road will look like once work is complete,’’ Waimakariri District Council staff said last week. ‘‘One half of the new intersection has been chip sealed in preparation for asphalt concrete paving. Unfortunately, the terrible weather we are experiencing has delayed the final surfacing.’’ This work is now planned to take place this week, weather permitting. Traffic signals have been installed and the construction of the Todds Road refuge islands have been

completed. Upcoming work includes kerb and channel construction extending from Station Road into Lineside Road, Station Road reconstruction, construction of entrances along Station Road, chip sealing and asphalt paving of the new intersection on Southbrook Road, completion of the Southbrook Road footpath. Council roading manager Ken Stevenson said he was pleased with how work had progressed on the project. ‘‘The contractors, Isaac Construction, have managed the site well, and kept disruption to the public to a minimum,’’ he said. ‘‘We have also appreciated the patience and tolerance shown by the public.’’

The Waimakariri district’s smallest residents will have their big day in next month. Toddlers’ Big Day In is back in the Rangiora New Life School’s gymnasium, on Denchs Road, Southbrook, on Sunday, July 19, from 10.30am to 2.30pm. Organiser Belinda Topp says Toddlers’ Big Day In is a follow on from the inaugural event held last July and is the winter version of the extremely popular summer event Toddlers’ Big Day Out. ‘‘The event focuses on pre­school aged children and their families and includes interactive options for their siblings too.’’ Belinda says Toddlers’ Big Day In is possible thanks to the support of local real estate agent Michelle Nelson, ‘‘who is extremely passionate about the immensely important concept of these events and after the initial Toddlers’ Big Day Out couldn’t resist being involved’’. During week one this term the technology department had a focus on Anzac day, with students across the school participating in Anzac focused activities. Year 10 design for visual communication students created posters for a New Zealand Defence Force competition to show ‘The spirit of the Anzacs in modern New Zealand’. RNLS students Maddison Miller and Sarah Millerick were named regional runners up and each received a special 100 year commemoration medallion. Their classmate Lauren Wiley was placed second overall and won an iPad mini as well as a medallion. Stock thefts a concern Police are asking for the public to be vigilant and report suspicious behaviour after a number of stock thefts between Hawarden and Rotherham. Constable Josh Clauson, from the Culverden Police, says over the past few weeks there has been stock stolen from either side of State Highway 7 from Balmoral north and from the Hawarden sale yards. While the only evidence is usually missing stock, a lamb’s head was retrieved

from next to the Hawarden sale yards, where it had been slaughtered. ‘‘I would encourage anyone who has missing stock to contact the police, either Culverden, Amberley or Rangiora. If anyone sees anything suspicious where there is stock near by, please let us know.’’ Constable Clauson says people often feel they are wasting police time by reporting stock thefts, but that is not the case. ‘‘We need to know about what is being taken and where from, so don’t hesitate to ring.’’

The Kaikoura Agricultural and Pastoral Show needs new recruits. Immediate past president Justine Schroder says community support is needed for the show to survive. A community meeting will be held next Tuesday, June 20, at Donegal House from 7pm, ahead of next month’s annual meeting. ‘‘Kaikoura is unique in that our township is large and rural community small, and with each passing year we are finding it increasingly hard to get enough volunteers and committee members to run this fabulous show. ‘‘Sadly our secretary is standing down at the AGM and we are left with no­one to fill these shoes, along with a dwindling number of committee members. We need to ask the community for help and what they want in the way of a future A&P show.’’ Justine says historically the shows have been run by the rural community, but support from the town is needed for the show’s survival. The community meeting aims to get an

idea of what people would like to see happen to the show, as well as to gain more community support and commitment in order to run the show.

James hopes to enjoy grand final despite stress televised evening show hosted by Mark Leishman at the Taupo Events Centre, with a quiz round before the scores are tallied and the 2015 contest champion is named.

By DAVID HILL James Hoban is feeling the stress as he prepares for his first ANZ Young Farmers Contest grand final next month. The Hurunui YFC member says he hopes to enjoy his first grand final appearance at Taupo during July 2 to 4. ‘‘It’s definitely stressful. I wonder if I’ll do it again. It’s definitely been very busy and I’m struggling to fit everything in. ‘‘I’ll just be trying to relax and enjoy it and make the most of the opportunity.’’ James qualified for the grand final after winning the Tasman regional final at Kirwee, near Darfield, in March and is believed to be the first resident North Canterbury young farmer to qualify since Scargill Valley farmer Andy Fox qualified in 1993. His father Pat Hoban was an active YFC member a number of years ago and competed in stock judging. James believes his strengths are in the interview and theoretical side, but says anything can happen over the three days. ‘‘Having spent a couple of days with the rest of the group, it will be a huge step up from the regional final. I think I will do well in the interview and public speaking, but the winner has to be an all­rounder and that’s good — the winner should be good at everything.’’ The contest is in its 47th year. Over a demanding three days, seven kiwi young farmers will be tested on all things agriculture ­ from practical hands­on modules, including the action­packed agri­ sports challenge, to theory and general

Both teams needed to win to secure an easier run in to the league title but both struggled to create scoring opportunities due to quality defending. Halswell opened the scoring through a defensive clearance, which rebounded off an attacker and into the back of the net to take the score to 1­nil at half­time. Last Saturday they toppled the other unbeaten team, Hurunui, to record their third win. Woodend are believed to be keen to seek re­ admission to the Division 1 competitions next season so they would need to win this competition to add credence to their cause. Last week’s heavy snow fall meant that no rugby could be played on Oxford fields last Saturday as they were still under a blanket of white powder. Matches in all grades were transferred, in most cases to the home ground of Oxford’s opponents. Rangiora High School (RHS) scored its third win in this season’s University of Canterbury championship beating Roncalli College 21­15. This is the first time that RHS has beaten them. It was Roncalli who narrowly beat RHS in 2009 in a match played at the original AMI stadium (Lancaster Park) to claim the one vacant slot in The Press Cup competition for the coming season. Since RHS gained entry to the competition in 2011 Roncalli has had the better of a number of close games.

Rangiora players chosen for team Two Rangiora Hockey Club members have been selected for the Canterbury under­18 development teams. Rebecca Jelfs, who plays in the Rangiora under­18 Youth Girls’ team, and Joshua Starling, who captains the Rangiora under­18 Youth Boys’ team, were selected in their respective teams to play in the Queens Birthday South Island Preparation tournament. Rebecca played in four games while Joshua played five. Both the U18 Youth Girls’ and Boys’ teams are competing in the Canterbury Hockey Association division one championship this season. The club is continuing to grow from four teams in 2010 to 19 teams this season and in the process is running out of places for teams to practice. A mini­turf, which is about a quarter the size of a full­sized turf, has been

installed for practice at Dudley Park. The club secured $98,000 of funding from the New Zealand Community Trust, in partnership with the North Canterbury Sports and Recreation Trust, to lay it. This comes after endorsement by the Rangiora Community Board and the Waimakariri District Council last year to redevelop the old Dudley Park Netball/ Tennis Courts into a junior ‘mini­turf’ and multi­sports facility for the use of the wider community. This facility will also be a valuable resource for the Rangiora Borough School to use. It has been developed without any ratepayer funding, through the hard work of Rangiora Hockey Club members who have done more than 500 volunteer hours and the North Canterbury Sports and Recreation Trust staff.

Thomas in Rangiora Library Thomas the tank engine is set to make an appearance at Rangiora Library next month. The Rangiora and North Canterbury Model Railway Club is setting a display at the Rangiora Library during the July school holidays, featuring Thomas and his friends. President Arthur Linnell says the club knows it will have its work cut out. ‘‘If you put the wrong carriages behind Gordon or Thomas, the kids will let you know.’’ The club will have sessions on Monday to Friday, July 6 to 10 and again July 13 to 17, from 9.30am to 12pm and 1.30pm to 4pm each day. A site visit to a private garden model railway close to the library will also be available from 1.30pm to 3pm on Friday, July 17. Mr Linnell says to club will be using a 1.8 metre by 1.2 metre layout base to show children how to lay track, to make trees out of foliage, shrubs, buildings, landscape, grass out of sawdust, hills and tunnels.

Sessions cost $1 per day per child to cover materials, including cardboard, printouts and glue. When the work is completed, a train will run be run on the layout. A Thomas and friends layout will also be setup close by. ‘‘For 50 cents children will learn how to run a train, start, slow down and stop at a station. Each child will receive a certificate as a qualified driver of a model train.’’ Kitsets will also be available for the children to put together and take home. ‘‘Each child will be given a piece of MDF (medium density fibre) board to take home and put together a diorama with a train / rail theme. This will be theirs to keep and later put on public display,’’ Mr Linnell says. Children should accompanied by an adult. More than 180 people gathered at the Glenmark Domain, Waipara, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Ballot of the Glenmark Settlement. A plaque was unveiled on a large rock at the entrance to the domain on land which was gifted to Waipara by Annie Townsend over 100 years ago. Annie Townsend was the daughter of George Henry Moore, who owned the huge Glenmark sheep station.The plaque reads: ‘‘This plaque is to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Ballot of the Glenmark Settlement that took place on 18th June 1915, commemorating the original land owners and those that followed.’’ In keeping with the theme of a ballot, one was held of those present on the day to see who would unveil the plaque. Bert Thomson drew two names from the ballot and drew his wife, Claire. Geoffrey King’s name was then drawn and with Claire went on to unveil the plaque. Bert’s grandmother, Alice Louise Thomson had been a successful applicant in the land ballot 100 years earlier and drew Section 3, which is still in the Thomson family (Manahune). Only two other original families are on their land ­ the McGuckins at Gumview and the Whytes at Wattle Grove. Geoffrey King’s grandmother had drawn Section 13 (Glendalough) in the land ballot and Geoffrey had been a third generation of Kings living on the farm where he grew up. Past resident, Shirley Bennett blessed the plaque. Shirley’s parents had been the second owners of Glendale which was Section 4 in the land ballot. After the blessing, the crowd went to the Waipara Memorial Hall which was filled with farming artefacts from the past. Wine barrels reflected the changes in land use since 1915, along with pictures, maps and photos. Some attending were current owners of land from within the original block of land balloted in 1915 and there was a good mix of new comers to the area, past residents and descendants from the original run holders. Hurunui District Mayor, Winton Dalley, told the audience the original Waipara Hall, which had been shifted from the site they were on, was now used as a woolshed on his farm. A second ballot was held and Donna Harvey and Rex Carsons’ names were pulled out to cut the anniversary cake. Donna had spent some of her childhood on The Bee Farm (Section 26) while Rex’s father, Jock Carson, had been one of the past owners of Highclere (Section 9), which was later owned by Rex’s brother Trevor. A book has been published with input from past and present owners as well as records of the run holders which was gifted to the Hurunui Library in Amberley. As the day wound down, people left with their books and copies of the original ballot maps to take home and study at their leisure.
